Owning your own website: what should business owners check?

By Enes, Minds on Web · · updated · 4 min read

When you have a website built, you want the domain, code and content to stay with your business. This guide explains what ownership means in practice, where it often goes wrong and the seven points to check before you sign.

The short answer

Your domain, text, photos and the website that was built should belong to your business. Put this in writing in the quote or agreement before work starts, together with arrangements for access, handover and licences. That way you can freely choose who to work with later, without losing your online presence.

Why ownership matters so much

Your website is often the first contact with new customers. You invest in copy, photos, search rankings and links from other websites. If those building blocks aren't yours, you depend on a single supplier. In a dispute, a bankruptcy or simply a price increase, you're in a weak position.

We regularly meet business owners who want to switch agencies and discover the domain is registered to the old agency, or that they only had a monthly licence on a website they can never take with them.

Renting versus owning a website: the differences

When you stop
Rented website

Owned website
Files remain yours

Difficult or impossible
Owned website
Freedom to switch, with files handed over
Total cost after 5 years
Rented website

Owned website
Predictable: build plus hosting

The domain: your digital address

For .be domains, DNS Belgium keeps the register. The holder of a domain is whoever is listed there. Check that your company is listed as the holder, not the agency. Also ask for your own access to the registrar's control panel, or at least to receive the transfer code whenever you request it.

Watch out with email: if your business mailbox runs on the same domain, control over the domain means control over your email.

Code, content and licences

Text and photos you supply remain yours. For the website itself, agree that the delivered code and design are transferred to you or that you receive an unlimited right of use. Also check licences for third-party parts: premium themes, fonts, stock photos and paid plugins. If they're in the agency's name, they may lapse when you leave.

Seven questions to ask before signing

  1. In whose name will the domain be registered?
  2. Do I get my own access to domain management, hosting and the website's admin?
  3. Will I receive all files and a full content export when I leave?
  4. Are there licences (themes, fonts, photos, plugins) in the agency's name?
  5. What does it cost to move the website to another provider?
  6. Is there a minimum term for hosting or maintenance, and what is the notice period?
  7. Who owns the analytics and Google Search Console accounts?

Common pitfalls

  • Choosing a cheap monthly plan without checking what happens when you cancel.
  • Google Analytics and Search Console set up under the agency's account.
  • Passwords held only by the supplier, without your own admin account.
  • Stock photos used without knowing whose name the licence is in.

What happens when you switch to another provider?

A well-managed transfer follows a clear sequence of steps. The new provider requests the files and a content export, sets up the website with the new hosting provider and tests everything. Then the domain is transferred or the DNS settings are updated, so visitors reach the new server without interruption.

Don't plan such a switch at the last minute. Check your current hosting's notice period, make a full backup and make sure your business email moves across correctly. If you own every part, you can arrange this calmly, without pressure from the old supplier.

How Minds on Web handles this

With us, the domain, content and delivered website remain your company's. Analytics and Search Console access is in your name. Hosting and maintenance are a separate, cancellable service from €25 per month excl. VAT. If you want to move later, we hand over the files properly, with no surprises.

Frequently asked questions

What if my domain is currently in my agency's name?

Ask for the transfer code (auth code) and have the holder changed to your company. A professional agency will help you complete this process.

Is a rented website always a bad idea?

Not always. For a short period or a very tight budget it can work, as long as you know what happens when you cancel and the domain stays yours.

Can I move my website to another hosting provider?

Yes, if you own the website. You receive the files and content, and the new provider moves everything over.
